What is a Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE)?

A Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) measures and objectively quantifies an individual's ability to perform activities.

An FCE is a measure of a client’s functional ability to perform personal and/or occupational tasks. The results of the FCE can be used to direct rehabilitation and/or as part of a disability determination.  It consists of a battery of tests to measure functional capacity, like bending, gross dexterity, and crouching, fine dexterity, walking, and reaching.

In general, the purpose of FCE is to collect information about the functional limitations of a person with medical impairment. An FCE is typically used in conjuction with a physical demand analysis. The physical demand analysis takes a job, determines the essential tasks then outlines the physical demands of those tasks. The results of the FCE testing are compared to the physical demands analysis.
